What are Refractory Expansion Joints?

A refractory lined expansion joint is a pipeline assembly that allows it to expand and contract. when climate conditions change from hot to cold, ensuring that the system stays operational.

Types of Refractory Expansion Joints:

There are several forms of expansion joints, including tied universals, hinges, gimbals, and pressure-balanced joints.

The flexible membrane design is essentially the same for all three categories, although the flexible membrane can be single-ply, multi-ply, redundant ply, or reinforced.

The “creep” that was present in early generations of these materials is no longer present in today’s castables (and even plastics). In general, earlier materials were less rigid and had more give, allowing them to adjust for heat expansion.

Because today’s basic materials are purer and much denser, many of the modern materials are stiffer. This makes them more rigid at working temperatures, making correct expansion estimates even more important when designing a thermal lining.

Two Main Types of Expansion:

In our industry, there is also some misunderstanding about the various sorts of expansion. There are two primary types:

  • Permanent Linear Change 
  • Thermal Expansion

Permanent Linear Change 

After the initial bakeout, a dimensional change causes permanent linear change. When the material returns to ambient temperature, this is a one-time occurrence. These statistics can be positive or negative, depending on the material and the temperature. Which was baked out, and can be found in the refractory product datasheets.

Thermal Expansion

Thermal expansion differs in that it is measured in inches per inch per degree Fahrenheit. This means that a material with a negative permanent linear change can still expand during bakeout or at operational temperatures. 

Estimating thermal expansion accurately is a blend of art and science; calculations must consider whether the refractory castable is put on a wall, roof, or hearth, as well as the temperature of the environment.as whether it is in an enclosed or unenclosed space because all of these aspects affect the net change.

Calculating the Expansion Joint Using Four Parameters!

The following four parameters must be considered in order to compute the allowance for expansion joints in castable refractory construction:

  1. The known constant for the coefficient of expansion of the material to be cast.
  2. The refractory castable an irreversible linear change
  3. The maximum temperature at which the refractory castable will be exposed
  4. The length of any constrained dimension of a cast
