Water Preheater In Boiler: Everything You Should Know!

Boiler Feedwater Preheater

November 23, 2022

The incoming water temperature needs to be raised in order to improve the boiler’s efficiency. The boiler won’t operate effectively if the incoming cold water’s temperature is less than 50°C (122°F). You need something like a water preheater or feedwater preheater to address this problem. They can lower the temperature of water entering a boiler because they feature preheating, which involves heating the water before it enters the boiler. But how? There’s a lot more to consider, so read the article right away to learn more about water preheaters/WPH.

What is Water Preheater & Boiler Feedwater Preheater?

Water preheaters are designed to reduce the temperature of water entering a boiler. A boiler is a vessel where steam is produced by boiling water. In order to produce steam, the water inside the boiler needs to reach a certain temperature. If the incoming water is not hot enough, then the steam production will be reduced. They are often used in power generation facilities, chemical processing plants, and food manufacturing plants. Boiler feedwater preheaters use high-pressure steam to drive turbines that generate electricity or operate machinery.

How Does Water Preheater Work in Boiler?

The feedwater in the feedwater container is warmed by the industrial feedwater preheating system. This results in the release of gases that are harmful to the steam system (such as oxygen and carbonic acid).

By introducing steam produced by the steam boiler to the feedwater container, the feedwater is heated. The feed water’s temperature is continuously monitored. A steam valve opens, heating the water if it drops below the desired level. If it increases past the desired level, the steam valve once more closes. That is how a boiler’s water preheater works.

What is the Purpose of a Water Preheater?

A feedwater preheater raises the temperature of the water before it enters a boiler for steam production. Boilers typically waste 18 to 22% of fuel combustion through exhaust stream gases. This waste heat is an excellent source of energy to preheat feedwater. This significantly reduces fuel usage because the boiler doesn’t need to work as hard… Saving money and eliminating related pollution!

What are the Benefits of Water Preheater (WPH)?

Here are the following benefits & significant features of installing a water preheater in boiler. Take a look!

  • Minimum Maintenance
  • Easy to Operate
  • Corrosion Resistance
  • Longer Functional Life
  • Easy to Install
  • Cost-effective Option
  • Robust Design

Water Preheater vs Air Preheater:

Ganeshas supplies and installs Air Preheater (APH) & Water Preheater (WPH) as per industry requirements.

The purpose of WPH is to recover the heat from the boiler feed water,  increasing its quality. This in turn improves boiler efficiency, reduces operating costs, and reduces the chance of thermal shock.

As part of the operational cycle, the APH captures the waste heat from the flue gases that exit the boilers and uses it to preheat the air before combustion. Additionally, it can control the temperature of gases leaving the stack (in order to comply with emissions regulations).

How do I know if my boiler needs a water preheater installed?

The temperature of the water entering the boiler is directly related to the efficiency of the boiler. If the water entering the boiler gets too cold, then the steam produced inside the boiler will condense back into liquid water, causing the boiler to lose efficiency. If you notice any of the following symptoms, then your boiler may need a water preheater:

  •  Your boiler is not producing enough steam.
  •  Steam pressure is low.
  •  There is excessive condensation inside your boiler.
  •  Your boiler is leaking.
