What Are Refractory Mortar Types & Uses? General Overview

Refractory mortar is composed of cement, sands, fireclay, and additional specific components as with calcium aluminate. Fire clay mortar is a group of clays that can withstand temperatures of up to 3,000 ℉. Consider this to be clay with unique heat-resistant characteristics. Fire clay mortar is used in the manufacture of fire bricks mortar and contributes to their ability to endure high temperatures. In accordance with ASTM C-199, mortars can be classified as refractory or heat resistant.

Types of Refractory Mortar

Based on the bricks’ chemical composition, we manufacture and supply various types of refractory mortars, such as high-alumina refractory mortars, fire clay refractory mortars, silica refractory mortars, etc.

Hydraulic Setting Mortar

Along with its non-soluble water nature, this is by far the best mortar. It is necessary to combine aggregates and binders for up to six hours. The mortar must be mixed at a high temperature of 1499 degrees Celsius.

Fireclay Refractory Mortars

Fireclay refractory mortar is commonly used for adhesive bonding and repairing blast furnaces, hot coke ovens, absorbing pit furnaces, heat transfer, boilers, as well as other high-quality clay brick industrial furnaces masonries.

Air Drying Mortar

The air-drying mortar takes longer to dry than its name implies. As a result, it is recommended in hot and dry climates. This combination is also known as premixed Refractory mortar including clay, molten silicate, and particles. Its attributes are inferior to those of the former.

High Alumina Refractory Mortars

As the main material, high alumina clinker plays a central role in the production of refractory mortar which is bound with a mild-clay or chemical bond. This material is commonly used as lining for glass furnaces, coke ovens, and hot blast stoves.

Silica Refractory Mortars

Various industrial furnaces use quartz refractory mortar for the installation and repair of blast furnaces, coke ovens, warm blast stoves, glass melting furnaces, and acid melting furnaces.

Mullite Refractory Mortar

In steel, non-ferrous metals, and petrochemical plants, mullite refractory mortar is commonly used for repairing and laying mullite bricks, as well as constructing high-temperature furnaces and kilns.

Where Should Refractory Mortar Be Used?

Refractory mortar should be utilized everywhere that it will be subjected to extremely high temperatures. This is obvious logic, yet we see failures in particular portions of chimneys and fireplace fireboxes all the time because masonry did not use the correct sort of mortar for the job. Now for the predetermined response…

For the construction of fireboxes, parging (coating) smoke chambers, and setting clay flue liners, the NFPA recommends using a medium-duty refractory cement that has been tested and approved. Moreover, they want to cement and its agents to not be water-soluble, which is why calcium aluminate is used.

This requirement is met by the calcium aluminate binder. Without calcium aluminate or an equivalent, the joints of the chimney will either dissolve or soften if exposed to moisture.

Does Everyone Use Refractory Mortar Where They Should?

It’s quite simple to simply use the same mortar for everything after preparing a bunch of mortar, and not follow the NFPA recommendations. It is also common for masons to mix up their own fireclay-infused mortar on the job, but these mixes are rarely tested and are not always able to withstand the high temperatures produced by fireplaces.

Due to historical reasons, these standards for refractory mortar were simply not in place before the 1990s, so unless you are doing new construction, you likely don’t have it where you need it.
